Technology 800 is a one-trimester course that will cover the basics and some intermediate concepts in Photo Editing through the medium of Photoshop CS. The class will start with a review of the MS Word image editing tools and quickly move on to Photoshop. Skills covered will include basic photo enhancements, several methods of cropping, cloning within a photo and between photos, hue and saturation tools, changing colors within a picture, the Art History and History tool, adding text, artistic filters, transparencies, and more.See the left sidebar for more information.
Students will display their work in a variety of creative formats on a webpage of their own design. The website will include a prescribed set of required information and will display the student’s creativity in communicating their ideas and work. Students will be expected to research online Photoshop sources to share learning tools, videos, and online websites as a method of collaborating with other members of the class. As is the nature of a wiki, students will be expected to participate in the webpages of other class members by assisting, contributing to a discussion or simply commenting.
AIMS
The aim of this class is to encourage and enable students to:
develop an appreciation of the significance of technology, specifically use of images, for life, society and the environment
use knowledge, skills and techniques to create products/solutions of appropriate quality
develop problem‑solving, critical- and creative‑thinking skills
develop respect for others’ viewpoints and appreciate alternative solutions to problems
use and apply information and communication technology (ICT) effectively as a means to access, process and communicate information, and to solve problems.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
evaluate the importance of the problem for life, society and the environment
formulate and discuss appropriate questions that guide the investigation of a task
identify and acknowledge a range of appropriate sources of information
collect, analyze, select, organize and evaluate information
EVALUATION PROCEDURES
Students will be evaluated in a variety of ways that include unit tests, individual and group projects, a summative assessment, homework and in-class assignments. They will be required to produce a webpage where the student:
shows evidence of original creation and uses appropriate web‑authoring tools
provides intuitive navigation and demonstrates consistent design
uses text, graphics, and other media as suited to the purpose of the product/solution.

Human Ingenuity
Students will study human contributions in the world of graphic artists. Students are expected to reflect on the origin, process, context, development and impact of the product/solution on individuals, societies and the world. Technological developments and innovations may be assessed from a social, economic, political, environmental, cultural and ethical perspective.
To this end, students will keep a journal on their personal webpage, prepare a lesson they will teach other students, develop a summative project that shares the importance of Photoshop with their peers. Other activities include:
analysis of specific products/solutions and processes derived from technology and how they have changed the world
evaluation of social and ethical factors associated with technological developments
appreciation of the responsibility of designers, and of those who develop new technologies, for the uses and consequences of their products and designs.
Approaches to Learning
This class will contribute to an aggregate shared and agreed-upon set of skills that all teachers develop with their students throughout the Middle School program and provide students with another tool for the effective communication of their ideas in any class. Students will be able to create computer generated products/solutions to perform a task or meet a need in a variety of educational situations as an additional skill to assist and enhance learning.
